Shit, is that him? I flew into panic mode the moment I spotted Marco sitting with Noah in the cafe, casually eating lunch and talking. I’d been avoiding Marco like the plague ever since Noah’s mother had insulted me in public, because it made me see how everyone would view our relationship.

It wasn’t just Mrs. Hilborne who would see me as a gold digger. Since no one knew the real story about me and Marco, about Jasper’s true identity, I would always be seen as the out-of-town girl who latched on to the billionaire as he swept into town. God, I didn’t even give a shit about Marco’s money. It had nothing to do with that. It had always been him as a person.

I dragged my eyes away from Marco and Noah because I desperately didn’t want to get caught, I put my head down and practically ran away from the cafe windows so no one could see me. I had Jasper with me, luckily in the stroller so I could move fast, and I ducked into the nearest alley as soon as I could. Even though I was breathless and my heart hurt, I didn’t stop. I couldn’t remain where I was for fear of having to see Marco again. I could ignore his text messages and not answer his calls, I didn’t even need to listen to his voice mails, but things would be very different face to face.

I could hold my own through so much, and looking into his eyes would be too much for me. Even the idea of seeing him staring at me sent a shudder down my spine. Unfortunately, Marco was the one man who could turn me into a puddle before him.

I hadn’t yet told Marco the truth about Jasper. Alexis knew nothing about me and Marco. There were too many secrets all being shoved down, and soon I feared they were going to erupt like a volcano. The secrets weren’t just little ones that would cause a bit of drama; they were life changing. The more that I thought about them, the worse they became. Because Jasper’s identity wouldn’t just affect Marco, would it? Alexis wasn’t going to only find out that I had betrayed her with her brother, but also that I’d been keeping Jasper’s identity a secret from her. Knowing that he was her nephew wasn’t going to be good news.

I felt a bit sick as I continued to walk fast. The anxiety from everything that I was keeping inside sucked. Seeing Marco with Noah like that had dragged everything back up and made it very obvious that I absolutely needed to make some changes in my life. I’d been settled into my life, bumbling along in a casual happy life, but now Marco was back and everything had been turned on its head. A sharpness had struck me like a lightning bolt. Things couldn’t continue as they were.

Eventually, I was out of any sight line, even if Marco did catch glimpse of me, so I could stop half running and just catch my breath.
